IR + A + Infinitive Future
Remember though that in everyday conversation you are more likely to hear the "informal" future, which is the ir + a + infinitive construction. This is the equivalent of 'I am going to the party tomorrow" where the present tense conjugation of 'IR' covers for the future part of this sentence ('am going'). Let's see some examples:
I am going to eat tonight Yo voy a comer esta noche
It breaks down as follows:
I = Yo (pronoun for pronoun)
am going = voy
to = a
eat = comer
tonight = esta noche
This break down is key! My students constantly try to literally translate 'going' with its Spanish 'ing' equivalent, Don't!
The Spanish present tense conjugation of "IR" covers for this. Let's do some more.
You are going to school Tu vas a la escuela
They are going to play Ellos van a jugar
We are going to study Nosotros vamos a estudiar
He is going to run El va a correr
